There is one school that won the very first IHSA state football championship (chronologically) played in 1974. That same school won the very first IHSA state basketball championship (chronologically) when the 4 class sytem began in 2008. Do You Know which school that is?
In 1974, Flanagan High School defeated Concord Triopia High School 13-8 to win the IHSA Class 1A football championship. Although other games followed the same weekend, this was the first one played in the current football playoffs system.
In 2008, the Flanagan-Cornell High School Girls' team defeated Newark High School 62-60 in overtime to win the IHSA Class 1A State Title. Although 3 other champions would be crowned that year, this was the first one played in the 4 class system.
(For those of you unfamiliar with Central Illinois, Flanagan is located @ 10 miles west of Pontiac on State Route 116)
