Biography: Merrill was born in 1910 and by the 1940’s was making a name for himself in the radio business.  He helped purchase WJBL for $15,000 and renamed it WSOY.  He was the station’s general manager and began broadcasting Decatur high school games n the 1940’s.  For 19 years Merrill did play-by-play for the University of Illinois and Millikin University games.  He was a charter member of the Decatur Community Hall of Fame.  Merrill passed away on November 2, 2001.
