Biography: Jerome “Jerry” Holtzman is widely acclaimed as one of the top baseball writers in the country.  At the Chicago Sun Times, he is well remembered for his efforts on the high school basketball level.  Holtzman began his career as a sports copy boy for the Chicago Times in 1943 at the age of 16 (which merged with the Chicago Sun in 1948).  After a two-year stint with the US Marines, Jerome returned in 1946 to the paper becoming the high school sports writer.  He held this post until the baseball position came available in 1957.  Since that time, Holtzman has authored articles for Sports Illustrated, The Sporting News, Sport Magazine, Baseball Digest, New York Magazine, and the Encyclopedia Britannica.  His 1974 book, No Cheering in the Press Box was cited by the New York Times as one of the 100 noteworthy books of that year.  Jerome Holtzman passed away on July 19, 2008.
