Biography: Ed Gleason was a three-year starter at (Chicago) St. Mel High School from 1951-1954. As a sophomore, Gleason’s team won the North Section, but was defeated by St. Rita HS, the eventual City Championships, in the Catholic League playoff. Gleason was named as an all-star his junior season. Ed started and captained St. Mel as a senior when the team went 26-5. They were again the North Section champions; St. Mel won the St. George Holiday Tournament and the Chicago Catholic League championship. In the 1954 City championship game, St. Mel defeated the famed DuSable HS team. Both teams are now members of the IBCA Hall of Fame. Gleason was named to the all-star team and was awarded a four-year scholarship to The University of Notre Dame where he played under Johnny Jordan. Chicago sportswriter and columnist Bill Gleason named Ed Gleason (no relation) to his All-Time Chicago Greats basketball team.
