Biography: Back in 1976, after starting the volleyball program at Belleville West High School, Larry Betz was talked into also taking the girls basketball job for one year and initiating that program. “Thing was, I enjoyed it and decided to stay another year,” Betz said. “I was at it ever since until retiring in 2000 and that another year had blossomed into 25 years.” In his reign, Betz compiled a 419-216 record. Belleville West went 148-62 in 21 seasons of Southwest Conference play and won eight championships. Also collected by the Maroons under Betz were 12 regional and five sectional championships. The 1990-91 team was undefeated until the sectional championship and the 1978 team advanced to the Elite Eight. Two of Betz’s players gained all-America status – Amy Rakers in 1987 and Marnie Triefenbach in 1992. Betz also served as an IBCA all-state representative on the nomination board from 1988 through his induction in 2001.
