Jack Dettro

Biography: Jack Dettro started 36 years of basketball coaching at Stonington High School in 1957-58. In his career, all at Stonington, Dettro’s teams produced 646 victories against only 291 defeats. Stonington, under Dettro, rolled to nine IHSA district championships, seven IHSA regional championships, and one IHSA sectional crown. His 1982 team won 28 of 29 games before dropping its first game in the Class A State Tourney at Champaign to Monmouth 81-59. Dettro teams won eight conference championships and 15 times his teams won at least 20 games. In 1982, Dettro was named the Decatur Herald and Review Area Coach of the Year. In 1984, Dettro was named to the Milliken University Hall of Fame. In gratitude, the Stonington High School Gymnasium was renamed after Coach Dettro.  Jack Dettro died on June 19, 2011 at the age of 77.
