Biography:

Led by all-America point guard Marie Christian and Jennifer Jones, the Marshall Lady Commandos defeated East St. Louis Lincoln 57-49 in the Class AA championship game to cap a 32-0 season and the first of eight state titles for the school and head coach Dorothy Gaters. This was a very talented and unselfish team with two players who went on to compete in the NCAA Final Four in 1985 as Christian started at point guard for national champion Old Dominion and Jones played forward for Western Kentucky.

Christian and Jones received all-tournament honors in Champaign. In an 84-48 semifinal rout of East Aurora, Jones had 22 points on 11-for-14 shooting and 6 rebounds, Annette Jones had 18 points and 5 rebounds and Christian had 16 points, 7 assists, 4 blocks and 4 rebounds. In the championship game, Jennifer Jones had 23 points and 9 rebounds and Annette Jones 16 points and 9 rebounds. Six players from the team went on to play Division I basketball and the team’s success was a result of being great friends off the court.
