Biography:
This group of ladies on the Class AA state champions were small, quick and tenacious defenders who delighted in smothering their opponents. That was evident in the Lady Commandos’ four state tournament victories where they allowed only 42.5 points a game with an average victory margin of 23 points. They finished with a 31-1 record and were ranked second in the final regular-season Class AA Associated Press poll.
It was a wonderful, talented group of young ladies who loved the game of basketball. The team featured outstanding shooters and was led by Chicago Sun-Times Player of the Year Kim McQuarter, Sheryl Porter and point guard Veronica Ross, who later led the nation in assists as a senior at DePaul University.
McQuarter was second in the state tournament in scoring with 58 points and Wright was third with 52 as both earned all-tourney honors. McQuarter had 22 points, 8 rebounds and 6 steals in a 63-41 quarterfinal win over Centralia and 21 points and 7 rebounds in a 62-48 semifinal win over unbeaten Peoria Richwoods and star Nora Lewis. Wright had 25 points and 8 rebounds and McQuarter scored 15 in a 63-37 win over Wheaton Central for the title.
