Biography:
The Lady Commandos repeated as Class AA champions with a 27-5 record and were ranked fifth in the final Associated Press regular-season poll as the Kim Williams era began at the Chicago powerhouse. Williams was the starting point guard as a freshman and senior Kenya Pittman provided leadership for a young team. Other freshman contributors were Marie Scott and Yolanda Miller, who went on to become the No. 1 team in the country as seniors.
This Marshall team was molded like previous champions with a tenacity in its pressure defense and transition offense. Pittman was second in the Elite Eight in scoring with 51 points and Harris had 38 points as they earned all-tournament honors. Pittman scored 18 and Harris 15 as the Lady Commandos pulled away from a tie to beat Westchester Immaculate Heart of Mary 53-44 in the quarterfinals. Pittman (13 points, 5 rebounds) and Scott (10 and 10) led a 45-43 semifinal win over Chicago Mother McAuley and Pittman (20 points, 6 steals), Harris (14 points, 5 assists), Williams (11 points) and Lashonda Price (10 points) led the way to a 65-49 championship-game victory over West Aurora.
