The Lady Commandos entered the season with a chip on their shoulders after a controversial overtime loss in the 1991 Chicago Public League championship game. The Class AA state champions finished 31-1 and ranked No. 1 in the final Associated Press regular-season poll. They had all the ingredients champions are made of with great point guard play (Kim Williams), excellent shooting (Yo Miller), good inside play and rebounding (Marie Scott), a great bench and speed to burn. These young ladies were outgoing and playful but knew when to get down to business.
Williams received first-team all-tourney honors as Marshall dismantled Whitney Young 66-30 in the Public League championship. Williams had 13 points, 8 rebounds and 6 steals in a 48-32 quarterfinal win over Moline High School. The Lady Commandos trailed by a point at halftime in the semifinal but responded to beat (Des Plaines) Maine West High School 51-39 behind Williams (14 points, 8 rebounds) and Miller (12 and 10). The championship against (Bartonville) Limestone High School came down to the final five seconds when Williams found Miller for the tie-breaking basket and a 48-46 victory. Williams and Miller scored 14 apiece and Scott had 10 points and 9 rebounds.
