The Lady Commandos recovered to finish 31-1 with a second straight Class AA title and third in four years and the No. 1 ranking in the final regular-season Associated Press AA state poll. They also beat the new No. 1 team in the nation from Kokomo (Ind.) in January while wearing throwback Converse canvas basketball shoes.

The end of the Kim Williams era culminated in a 44-41 title game win over a tough and scrappy (Des Plaines) Maine West team. Williams earned Ms. Basketball in Illinois, was a high school all-America and the MVP of the nationally televised Kodak All-American Game. Yolanda Miller, Marie Scott and Williams earned all-tourney honors in the Elite Eight. Miller had 25 points and 10 rebounds in a 66-52 quarterfinal win over Buffalo Grove and Miller had 19 points and 7 rebounds and Williams scored 18 in a 58-52 semifinal win over (LaGrange) Lyons Township. Scott had 17 points and 7 rebounds and Williams scored 9 points in the championship.

Three players went on to become NJCAA national champions at West Ark College in Arkansas and four players became junior college all-Americans. Williams led the nation in scoring as a senior at DePaul, scoring 41 points against Tennessee and Chamique Holdsclaw, the No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft. Williams and Alissa Burras went on to play professionally in the WNBA and Europe.
