Biography:

Rick Smith was a teacher, administrator and coach at Franklin High School beginning in 1973. He became the athletic director in 1992 and Dean of Students in 2001. He won more than 300 games as a junior high basketball coach from 1973-95 and was IBCA District Coach of the Year three times. Smith became the school’s cross country coach in 1980 and won 12 regional titles, while having three teams and several individuals qualify for the state meet.

Smith was awarded the Class A Outstanding Athletic Director award in 2003 by the Illinois Athletic Directors Association. He served as president and treasurer for the MSM Conference and Franklin FAN Booster Club. He was an active member of the IBCA and IADA.

Rick Smith died on December 2, 2024.
