Biography: Glenn Whittenberg’s teams at (Maywood) Proviso East High School posted a 309- 73 record. Whittenberg’s career record, which includes stints at Ziegler and Herrin, stands at 506 – 144.  At Proviso East, Whittenberg produced five Suburban League Champions, four West Suburban League Champions, nine regional titles, six Thanksgiving Tourney crowns, four Proviso West Christmas Tourney crowns, while winning four IHSA Sectionals, three IHSA Super-sectional winners, the IHSA State Championship in 1974, and state runner-up in 1981. Whittenberg has coached nine all-state players and one All-American player in Glenn (Doc) Rivers. Glenn along with fellow All-State player Joe Ponsetto, is a member of the IBCA Hall of Fame. Whittenberg was the State Coach of the Year in 1971 and District III coach of the year in 1981. In 1975 and 1979 Whittenberg was named Suburban Life Newspaper Coach of the Year. Illness took Whittenberg from the sidelines in mid-year 1982 – 83. The low-keyed Whittenberg was described by many in the suburban ranks of coaching as the most under rated “known” coach in Illinois and always as a great person and outstanding coach. Glenn Whittenberg died at the young age of 56 on July 28, 1983.
