Biography: Harvey Hartenstein attended Lane Park and Hyde Park High Schools in Chicago and then Roosevelt University and the University of Illinois. Hartenstein coached (Chicago) Marshall High School to four state tourney berths in 1961, 1965, 1966, and 1972. In 1961 and 1965 Hartenstein’s Commandos placed third. Hartenstein teams won 11 Chicago Public League Titles, was Chicago City Champions three times and runner-up three times. In addition, Hartenstein teams won the Mayor Christmas Tournament three times, the Henry Hall Thanksgiving Tournament two times. Harvey went on to become the first coach for (Chicago) Whitney Young High School when it opened. In all, Hartenstein teams won 447 games while losing 199. Harvey died in April of 2013 due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease.
