Biography

Dan Wineberry of Bloomington started as an Illinois State University basketball statistician in 1978 but his avid involvement with basketball started long before that. The graduate of Stonington High School came to ISU in 1969 and quickly became hooked on hoops.

He was the “Reggie Redbird” mascot for a couple of years. He began a vast collection of Redbird sports publications, which includes nearly every ISU basketball program published since he came to college.

Wineberry’s fanatical involvement once had him take a bus to Tulsa, Oklahoma, so he could see the start of the ISU-Oral Roberts game, knowing he would have to leave at halftime for the long ride back so he wouldn’t be late for work.

He continued to volunteer his time as a statistician for men’s and women’s basketball at ISU. He started with the men in 1978 and the women in 1981. Wineberry also started volunteering as a boys’ super-sectional statistician in 1985 and for the girls’ state tournament in 1992. He also compiled complete football and boys’ basketball statistics for The Bloomington Pantagraph in 1991.  Dan continued this through his induction.
