Biography: Morton “Mort” Cantor was the station manager of WIRL radio at the time of his induction in 1973. Mort Cantor has been around the sports scene since 1943 when he covered prep sports scenes for the Peoria Journal Star as a sophomore at Woodruff High School. He became athletic publicity director for Bradley University in 1949 and coached the Camp Breckenridge, KY basketball team for two years. Mort did high school play-by-play basketball including state tournaments for many years. For over 2 decades, Mort was the radio voice of the Bradley Braves using his key phrase “The Braves will begin going from right to left on your radio dial!” He made the games very real for several generations of Peoria fans. Mort also was the president and co-founder of the Bradley Chiefs Club, the university’s booster organization. Mort was a dedicated resident of Peoria. Mort passed away on June 29, 1995.
