Biography: Tom Armstrong served Carterville athletics in many ways including grade school teacher and coach; junior high school teacher, coach and principal. From 1971-91 Tom served as the athletic director for the Carterville School Unit.
In 1985-86 and 1990-91 he was named as the Class A outstanding athletic director of the year. In this capacity, he directged numerous IHSA tournament and football playoff games. Tom endeared himself to the officials who worked games at Carterville by managing the many details that make events run smoothly. He was highly thought of by members of the Egyptian Officials Association. They thought of him as “very professional, well-organized, punctual, knowledgeable of the game and IHSA rules, and concern for participants and spectators.”
