Biography:
Jim Barton was the first basketball player from Edwardsville High School to score 1,000 career points. He was a sophomore reserve on Edwardsville’s first state tournament team in 1951. Despite suffering a serious football shoulder injury, Jim was a strong reserve on that IHSA state squad. Jim’s play earned him induction into the Edwardsville High School Hall of Fame. Jim once stated that being a part of Edwardsville’ golden era of basketball was a high point in his athletic career.
Jim did not go far to play his collegiate basketball. He chose nearby Washington University (MO). Once he cracked the starting lineup, Jim started 71 consecutive games for the team. He was a 2-time All Southwest Conference player selection. At the time he graduated, Jim held 13 scoring records, many that were not broken for many years. His stellar play earned him a spot in the inaugural class of the Washington University Hall of Fame.
