Biography:
R. Bruce Carroll was a top basketball player at Atwood High School. He later played for an undefeated military team with Iowa coach Johnny Orr in California during 1943. After graduation from the University of Illinois-Champaign, Bruce was a high school basketball and football official. He coached 3rd through 6th grade boys’ basketball at Yankee Ridge School.
He served on the Carle Sports Medicine Committee from 1973 through his induction. He was responsible for securing outstanding speakers for the group including, Bob Knight, Dick Vitale, Johnny Orr, and Woody Hayes. From 1975 through 1979 Carroll was president of the Urbana Basketball Boosters and helped raise thousands of dollars for meals for athletes and for the purchase of the school’s new basketball scoreboard.
R. Bruce Carroll died on October 14, 2019 at the age of 92.
