Biography:
Gerald “Jug” Chapple attended Lebanon Community High School from 1949-1953. Gerald earned 4 varsity letters each in basketball, baseball and track for the Greyhounds. In addition to his busy athletic schedule, Gerald was an academic honor student for all four years of attendance. Gerald was selected to all-Cahokia Conference honors in his sophomore, junior, and senior years. His 772 points in three seasons set a Cahokia Conference record. In 4 seasons at Lebanon, Gerald scored 1, 447 career points for an average of 18.1 ppg. His high school coach, Ed Woods, said, “Jug was a quick and clever ball handler and an outstanding shooter for me at Lebanon. I would compare him with any guard playing in Illinois at the time,.”
He attended Arkansas State University on a basketball scholarship, lettering 3 times in basketball and 2 times in baseball. Once again he was an academic honor student and was named to Who’s Who of American Colleges and Universities in 1956. Gerald was a 2-year regular at Arkansas State and one of its leading scorers both years. He was named to the All Conference and All Arkansas College Player’s teams as a senior.
Gerald “Jug” Chapple died on December 23, 2014 at the age of 79.
