Biography:

L.D. (Les) Cowell has been a true friend of basketball.  Ask the fans, players, and coaches of Mid-County High School which serves the communities of Lacon and Varna in Midland County.  Cowell did it all for 45 years.  Cowell served as a bus driver, a scorer and a timer.

For 19 years, he ran the Mid-County Summer basketball program.  Cowell paid for players’ basketball shoes and for summer basketball camps for players when necessary.

To be sure they got to camp or summer games, Cowell would often drive players there.  When the basketball program needed something that it couldn’t afford, Cowell was ready with a cash donation and helped to secure others.

If that wasn’t enough to keep this Lacon resident busy, he found time to run the Little League baseball program for more than 20 years.
