Biography:

For more than 20 years, John W. Curry was associated with Athens Junior High School and High School athletics.  Curry held  numerous positions including assistant basketball coach, athletic director, baseball coach, volleyball coach, track coach, bus driver and perhaps Athens’ best fan.

Whenever there was a job to do, or a gap to fill, Curry was the Warrior savior.

For 10 seasons, Curry served both the high school and junior high school as a timer.  For 24 years, 1970-1994, Curry served as public address announcer and rarely missed a game at home.

Three years found Curry the junior high coach; two years found him the fifth and sixth grade coach, Curry served 10 years as freshman-sophomore coach, and that assignment included coaching a separate freshman team.  Curry was an assistant varsity coach for 10 years and served as athletic director for 16 campaigns.

Curry helped promote basketball in Central Illinois through publication of Central Illinois Prep Basketball Magazine.

After retiring from his coaching and AD duties, Curry enjoyed being a very typical bleacher coach and was always ready to offer advice to the basketball coach.  Curry, who taught math and computer instruction at Athens, is certainly entitled to be inducted as a Friend of Basketball.
