Biography: Fred Tuerk was the sports editor of the Peoria Journal Star for 35 years, beginning in 1919.  One of the great sports writers in Central Illinois, Fred was always dedicated to the finding of the facts.  He was a strong promoter of all sports especially boxing, bowling, and basketball.  Fred also served as the state boxing commissioner.  Fred passed away in 1954.
