Biography: Richard E. “Dick” Henley officiated high school sports for 22+ years in Illinois. The Herrin resident was named to officiate in Illinois High School Association Regionals 18 times. Henley officiated 9 IHSA Sectionals and 6 IHSA Super-sectionals. Henley was on the Assembly Hall floor for the last three one-class boys’ tournaments. Henley joined Ted Search of Chester as the officials for the 1970 championship game between Lyons Township (LaGrange) and United Township (East Moline). He also found continuous work for 18 seasons in holiday tournaments at Carbondale, Centralia, and Eldorado. Henley also officiated other tourneys in McLeansboro, Belleville East, Benton, Chester, Freeburg, Salem, and Sesser. He served the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association by officiating the 1975 All-Star Game at Horton Field House. Henley’s regular officiating duties came to an end in 1973. He served as principal of South Side Elementary and Junior High Schools in Herrin.  Richard Henley died on September 20, 2010 at the age of 73.
