Biography: In 1985, Dick Smith retired after 35 years of teaching and coaching in the Naperville community, serving as head coach in football, baseball and basketball. Being named to the IBCA Hall of Fame follows his induction into the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame by three years. But in addition to his coaching duties, Smith developed a reputation through Northern Illinois as a basketball official. Smith worked 27 Christmas Tournaments and 22 Thanksgiving Tournaments. Conference assignments were accepted in the Upstate Eight, Little Seven, DesPlaines Valley, Mid-Suburban, Central Suburban, West Suburban, DuPage Valley, SICA along with the East and West Suburban Catholic Conferences. Smith worked four IHSA Districts, 22 Regionals, and 6 sectionals. In the IHSA Girls Tournament Series, Smith worked 3 Regionals and a pair of Sectionals. Smith also worked junior college games including Regional and State Tournaments along with regular season Northern Illinois Collegiate Conference games. Smith was a member of the Suburban Basketball officials for 20 years, serving as president two years and on the Board of Directors for six years.
