Biography: Gene was a 4 year starter at (Kirkland) Hiawatha High School from 1961-65. He received all-state player recognition as a senior. His 2, 214 career points ranked #62 on the all-time Illinois list at the time of his graduation. (Remember that there was no 3-point line in that era) Gene was the #8 pick of the 1965 amateur basketball draft by the Detroit Tigers. He went on to catch for the Tigers and then went into managing. He won a division title as the manager of the Chicago White Sox. He also managed the Pittsburgh Pirates. Gene was the 3rd base coach for the Tigers at the time of his induction.
