Biography: Al Avant first distinguished himself as a member of the 1954 Mt. Vernon HS state championship team.  He averaged 19 points a game and was named to the all-tournament team in addition to being selected as an all state player.  After high school, Al moved on to Western Illinois University where he averaged 18 ppg, was an all IIAC performer as well as an NAIA all regional team member.
