Biography:
Carl Hayes earned two varsity letters while helping St. Joseph to a 54-7 record. In his junior year, the 6-foot-8 center/forward was the first player off the bench for a team that won an undefeated East Suburban Catholic Conference (ESCC) title and the Maine South Thanksgiving Tournament and placed third in the IHSA Class AA state tournament. He averaged 9 points and 7 rebounds a game.
As a senior, he helped the Chargers to a 26-4 record and another ESCC championship. They also won the Proviso West Holiday Tournament and reached the IHSA AA supersectionals. He averaged 21 points and 8 rebounds. He was the Proviso West tourney and ESCC MVP and a consensus all-state choice.
At Nebraska, Hayes averaged 12.6 points and 5.2 rebounds a game for his career and played on two NCAA tournament teams and one which won a school-record 26 games. He was honorable mention All-Big 8 Conference as a sophomore and junior and as of 2021 was tied for 23rd in career points at 1,136 with St. Joseph teammate Clifford Scales. He also played professionally in Europe and the Middle East.
