Biography:

Alfredrick Hughes had stellar careers at (Chicago) Robeson High School and Loyola University-Chicago before playing in the NBA for a year with the San Antonio Spurs. At Robeson, he was a first-team all-city as a senior by averaging 28 points, 11 rebounds and 3 blocked shots per game in 1980-81. Then he went to Loyola where he became a four-year starter, three-time Midwestern Collegiate Conference Player of the Year and star of the 1985 NCAA tournament team that reached the Sweet 16.

Loyola was 83-37 during the career of the player called Alfredrick “The Great.” The three-year scoring leader set the record for career points (2,914), was second in career average (24.3) and tied for fourth in career rebounds (982). His 27.6 scoring average as a junior set the record as the best in school history and his 26.3 as a senior ranked second.

As a senior, Hughes was an All-American player and set a single game record with 47 points against Detroit. He also had games of 43 and 42 points. Loyola beat Iona and Southern Methodist in the NCAA tournament before losing to defending NCAA champion and eventual runnerup Georgetown and Patrick Ewing in the Sweet 16. He averaged 5.2 points in one season with the Spurs. Hughes had his uniform No. 21 retired and is a member of the Loyola Hall of Fame.
