Biography

Steve Kimbro returned to his alma mater at Nokomis in 1978 and was the junior varsity coach for three years before taking over the varsity position that he held until his retirement after the 2019-20 season. Kimbro had a record of 838-308 in 39 seasons with 28 20-win seasons. None of his three losing seasons came after 1985. 

Kimbro’s teams made four state tournament trips and finished second in the IHSA Class 1A Tournament in 2008 and third in 1A in 2013. He also took teams to the IHSA Class A Elite Eight in 1983 and 1997. He was named Decatur Herald & Review Coach of the Year in 1997. His teams won 15 conference, 15 IHSA Regional and 6 IHSA Sectional championships.

Kimbro was named IBCA District 18 Coach of the Year in 1983, 1996 and 1997 and he served on the IBCA Class A All-Star game selection committee.

Steve Kimbro died on November 17, 2024 at the age of 69.
