Derril Kipp

Biography: Derril Kipp’s 34-year career as varsity girls basketball coach at Maine West was something to behold. He finished in 2015-16 with a 788-316 record and was sixth on the all-time list for wins by an Illinois girls coach. Kipp took seven teams to the Elite Eight – winning the 1988 Class AA title with a perfect record, finishing second in 1993, third in 1987 and 1992 and fourth in 1985.   Kipp’s girls set two state records. The Warriors set a mark for most consecutive conference wins with 110 in the Central Suburban League and from 1987-89 won 65 games in a row.  Kipp’s teams had four 30-win seasons and 19 20-win seasons and won 23 regional titles and 9 sectional crowns. His players earned 68 all-conference berths and 27 all-state honors as of 2001 with four receiving all-America honors. Nancy Kennelly was the 1988 Ms. Basketball in Illinois and countless players earned college scholarships.  Kipp served on the all-state selection committees for the IBCA and the Chicago Sun-Times and on the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association all-American committee. He was also a member of the Nike Advisory Board. Kipp passed away in July 2016 at age 71 after a battle with cancer.  Beginning in 2018, the IBCA honored Derril by naming its annual courage award in his name.
