Biography:
Bob Lingle of Metropolis covered sports for the Metropolis Planet newspaper for 22 years and in the late 1990’s he wrote a column for the Southern Scene, an all-sports newspaper. He served as a teacher for 36 years in Massac County, most of them at the high school. He also served 13 years as track coach, kept statistics in football and since 1976 was the official scorekeeper for basketball.
With one exception during his tenure as scorekeeper, Lingle worked every game of the Superman Tournament, which started in 1984. As a holdover from his years working at the newspaper, Lingle is known as “the keeper of the records.”
In retirement, Lingle kept busy teaching courses at Shawnee Community College and keeping statistics for football and track. He stayed as the official scorekeeper for Massac County’s boys’ basketball team and filled in for the girls when needed. He also started writing a history of basketball in southern Illinois.
