The 5-foot-8 guard was a two-time Class A all-state selection and a four-year starter for the Lady Raiders. She played in the state finals all four years in high school, helping her team take fourth in 1987, third in 1988 and 1990 and second in 1989.

Porter was an all-tourney selection all four years and set the Class A record for total points in the state tournament at 241.  As a senior she set a state record with 83 points in three state finals games and had 37 points and 10 rebounds in the third-place game victory.  She led all tourney scorers as a junior with 73 points and scored 24 in a 46-44 title-game loss to Teutopolis High School.

Porter averaged better than 26 points a game as a senior and earned Ms. Basketball honors in Illinois in 1990.  She was Player of the Year in the Champaign and Decatur areas and a first team all-state selection in Class A by the IBCA.  She was also a first-team USA Today selection. Porter played four seasons at Illinois State and averaged 9.7 points a game.
