Biography:  At the time of his induction, Mel Sheets had completed his 26th season of coaching at (Winnetka) New Trier High School after beginning his career in 1957 at Alton High School.  Upon entering the 1991-92 season, Mel’s teams had won 436 games and lost only 251.  

His record included 9 IHSA Regional Championships, 8 IHSA Sectional Titles.  3  times his teams advanced to the Elite Eight.  His teams from 1977-80 postred 99 wins agains just 18 losses.  All 4 teams advanced to the IHSA Sweet Sixteen.  Mel was named the IBCA District Coach of the Year on 4 occasions.  Six of his players earned All State player honors.  Mel coached the Class AA North for the IBCA All Star Game in 1991.

Mel Sheets died on March 24, 2019 at the age of 86.
