Biography

Bill Sir started as an assistant basketball coach in 1964 and was the varsity boys’ assistant at York at the time of his induction. The 1964 graduate of Elmhurst University was a four-year letterman in basketball and tennis.

Sir started his coaching career at Sandburg Junior High in Elmhurst and remained there until 1978. He helped start York’s summer basketball program for grades 3 through 12 with instruction, fun leagues and weekend shootouts.

Sir’s first high school assistant’s job came under legendary Hall of Fame Coach Dick Campbell. Sir was on the bench the night Campbell won his 500th game and later served as an assistant for Hall of Fame Career Coach Bob Ociepka at the sophomore level from 1984-88.

He worked for Hall of Famer Tom Anstett from 1988-1996, Jim Prunty from 1996-2000 and John Daniels from 2000-03. Even after he retired from teaching after 37 years, the 1960 York graduate coached junior varsity basketball, junior varsity girls’ tennis and varsity boys’ tennis. He was inducted into the Elmhurst University Hall of Fame in 2006.
