Biography:
Steve Spitz was the second youngest inductee into the Mattoon High School Hall of Fame. Steve scored 1,243 career points in a 3-year varsity basketball career (Note that this was in the era before the 3 point line was instituted into the high school rule book). At the time of his graduation, he was the school’s 2nd all-time scorer. During all three of his varsity seasons, he led the Green Wave in scoring and free throw percentage (76.8%). Three times Steve earned all-Big 12 Conference first team player honors and in 1970 he was named to all-state and all-American player honors. He led Mattoon to its 2nd ever IHSA Sweet 16 appearance in 1969.
Steve attended Loyola University–New Orleans for 2 seasons where he lettered in both basketball and baseball. When Loyola dropped all sports due to financial reasons, Steve transferred to Louisiana State University where he was named to 2nd team all Southeastern Conference player honors.
