Biography:
The 1971 Mount Carmel graduate came from Chicago Heights to become one of the school’s best players. At the varsity level, the Caravan were 51-17 during Walton’s playing days. His jersey was one of five that were retired as of 2003. At the time of his induction, he ranked third in scoring in school history and led the team as a junior (726) and senior (844). He set the school’s single-game scoring record of 43 points in 1970. He captained the 1971 team that finished 29-6, was MVP of the Public-Catholic Christmas Tournament, the Catholic League All-Star Game and the Knights of Columbus Tournament in Washington, D.C. Walton also was a Parade Magazine All-American.
Walton went to Marquette University to play for the legendary coach, Al McGuire and led the 1974 NCAA tournament runner-up in assists. Marquette was 76-11 with three NCAA appearances while Walton was in the lineup. He was a Basketball Weekly second-team All-American selection as a senior, when he was team captain, and for his three-year career ranked fifth in assists (480) and 50th in scoring (1,006 points). He tied for ninth in season assists (183). (Stats are as of his 2003 induction.)
Walton was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks in 1976 and played for them for four years before finishing his NBA career with a season playing for the Kansas City Kings. He later became an assistant coach at Marquette and a college scout for the New York Knicks. He is a member of the (Chicago) Mount Carmel, Chicago Catholic League (2004) and Marquette “M Club” (2015) halls of fame.
