Biography:
Neal Welz endeared himself to the Germantown community in Clinton County for the 33 years he served the students at Germantown Elementary School. Upon graduating from McKentree College, Neal spent his first year of coaching (1960) at St. Mary’s Grade School in Trenton where he resided his entire life. The following year he joined the staff at Germantown Elementary School, where he was still teaching upon his Hall of Fame induction.
Since Germantown became a member of the Illinois Junior High School Association, his team won the Southern State Championship in 1981 with a 27-0 record. The team returned in 1991 to place 3rd with a 22-6 mark. Neal’s 7th grade teams posted a record of 354-160. His 8th grade teams posted a record of 481-232. During the 26 years leading up to his induction, Germantown won the conference title outright 13 times and were co-champions 4 times. Neal’s 8th grade teams won 17 conference tournaments. The 7th grade teams picked up 13 conference tournament titles. They appeared in the title game 22 of 29 years.
