Biography:
Robert Witt served for 21 seasons as the head boys’ basketball coach at (Decatur) Eisenhower High School. His name has been endeared to Eisenhower HS since the gymnasium was named for him as well as a scholarship established by the faculty at the school for outstanding senior athles of the year. Witt’s teams earned a record of 318-224. Robert produced 13 winning seasons in his 21 years leading the program. Four times the squad was a 20-game winner. The teams won 13 IHSA Regional crowns, including 7 straight at one point. The teams won 2 IHSA Sectional titles, advancing to the state finals and finishing in 4th place in 1976.
Eisenhower ruled the Capital Conference 4 times and won the Decatur Thanksgiving Classic 6 times. In 1985, Eisenhower won the Illinois State Holiday Classic. Witt was named the IBCA District Coach of the Year in 1974 and 1976. 6 times he was named the Coach of the Year by the Decatur Herald and Review. Robert served as the first assistant coach of the 1982 Class AA South team in the IBCA All Star Game. He served on the All State Boards of the Chicago Daily News and the Chicago Sun Times.
Robert Witt died on November 12, 1990 at the age of 57.
