The University of Missouri
Biography: Gail Wolf led the Okawville Rockets to their first ever state tournament appearance in 1970. At that time the school had only 250 students, competing in the one class system. The Rockets defeated Centralia High School and Mount Vernon High School get to the finals. They ended Centralia’s 75 game winning streak of games in IHSA Regional play.
Gail was one of the first 7’0″ players from Illinois. He was considered a great shooter and always seemed to be playing under pressure. Okawville lost to Joliet Central 56-43 in the quarterfinals. Wolf’s three-year totals for the Rockets included 1,721 career points on teams that posted overall records of 61-14. (Note: These points were scored before the benefit of the 3 point line.)
Gail was recruited by most of the Midwestern basketball powers before choosing the University of Missouri. Injuries prevented Gail from the success that he had hoped even though he played several outstanding games for the Tigers.
Gail Wolf died on April 3, 2005 at the age of 53.
