Biography: Prior to the 1979-80 season, Bob Metcalf’s basketball teams had won 434 games while losing only 291. Included in that record were 7 conference titles 3 Holiday Tournament titles,2 IHSA District titles, 9 IHSA Regional crowns, and 4 IHSA Sectional championships. Additionally, his teams won six other tournament tiles. Robert’s career included coaching stints at Waterman High School (1950-54); (Lombard) Glenbard High School (1954-61); and (Normal) University High School. As a player Metcalf earned Little All-American Player honors at Valparaiso University in 1949. In 1969 he was named to the silver anniversary team for District 25-A for the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. During the 1977-78 year, Robert served as the president of the 25,000-member National High School Athletic Coaches Association. Metcalf finished his career as the athletic director at U-High and as a professor of Health and Physical Education for Men at Illinois State University in Normal. Robert Metcalf died on April 16, 2020 just shy of his 94th birthday.
