Biography: Joe Murphy coached basketball for 37 years after graduating from the University of Wisconsin where he played for the Big Ten Champions. His first job was as basketball and baseball coach at Cumberland University in Williamsburg, KY where he began in 1930. Joe took a break during WWII to serve his country in the US Navy. Joe then returned to Chicago where he had been an all-city player at (Chicago) Englewood High School. He was an all city player for the lightweights in 1923 when they were city champions. The following season he was again an all-city player in 1924 for the heavyweights who were the city runner-up. During Joe’s 36 year career at (Chicago) Austin High School where he coached numerous outstanding players who then continued their careers at the collegiate level. Joe did feel hampered by the rule in that era that only allowed players to play in one sport per year. Joe retired in 1967. Joe Murphy died in 1993 at the age of 87.
