Biography:
Steve Tucker was among the pioneers for media coverage for girls’ high school basketball. He attended his first state tournament in 1979. He was at either the IHSA Class A or Class AA each year until he began attending both state tournament finals every year beginning in 1984 and started covering them for the Chicago Sun-Times in 1990.
Tucker was the paper’s high school sports editor from 1994 until 2011. He began covering the NCAA Division I college women’s NCAA Final Four in 1987. In addition to covering high school basketball, Tucker covered Chicago-area Division I teams for 15 years. He wrote numerous feature articles for the IHSA state tournament and women’s Final Four game programs.
Tucker is a member of the Chicago Public League Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. In 1985, he was instrumental in organizing a banquet to honor the Sun-Times girls’ all-area team. He helped with the selection of the McDonald’s and Parade Magazine All-American teams and was on the selection committee for the Wooden Award for college women. He formed the first major AAU girls’ basketball club in 1986. Steve Tucker died on May 10, 2024.
