He was a mainstay on the 1936-37 Rushville team which won the 24-team DeKalb Holiday Tournament and capped the year as a member of the IHSA Sweet Sixteen. That season he was named all-Spoon River, all DeKalb Holiday and honorable mention all-state. Fulks received four letters in basketball at Western Illinois University from 1937-41 and played on one championship team and one runner-up in the Little 19 Conference. As a senior, Fulks was named most valuable player for the Leathernecks and accorded All-Little 19 Conference honors. Fulks was just as adept at baseball, playing four seasons at Western on two conference championships and was named to an All-American team which represented the United States in the Amateur World Series in Havana, Cuba in 1940. He retired in 1980 after 32 years as a teacher, coach and principal at Rushville High School.
