Biography:
Brad Salley of Belvidere was an IHSA basketball official for 34 years at the time of his induction. He was closing in on his 2,000th varsity game.
He worked 27 boys’ IHSA Regionals, 15 IHSA Sectionals and the IHSA Class A girls’ basketball state finals in 2002, 2003 and 2006. Salley also worked numerous holiday tournaments and benefit games. On the collegiate level he did NCAA Division III games and the Illinois Benedictine Invitational.
Salley was the officials assignment chairman of the NIC-10 for more than 30 years. He also saw action in the Continental Basketball Association. With the birth of IHSA girls’ basketball in 1976-77, he got even busier, working more than 25 girls’ IHSA Regionals and Sectionals.
The 2001-02 season was a special one for Brad and his involvement with the girls’ game. He had the distinction of being on the officiating team of the Yorkville Class A Supersectional and whistled the state’s first four-overtime girls’ game between (Lansing) Illiana Christian HS and (Elmhurst) Timothy Christian HS.
“It was the greatest game I’ve ever been associated with,” Salley said on the IHSA television network while working the Class A girls’ state tournament semifinal.
Salley also worked four IHSA baseball state finals and was named Bob Udell Umpire of the Year by the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association in 2011. He taught and coached at Belvidere High School and was a varsity football assistant from 1980-99 when the program won two state titles.
