Biography:

The 1996 Shelbyville Rams won the school’s first state championship with a 34-1 record and finished the regular season with the No. 1 ranking in the Associated Press Class A state poll. Shelbyville beat Mid-State Conference rival (Breese) Mater Dei for the third time in the title game 58-45 as Todd Wildermann scored 17, Rich Beyers had 15 and 11 rebounds and Kevin Herdes added 11 points.

Beyers, who played at Illinois, was named to the all-tournament team and averaged 15.5 points in the state tourney. Shelbyville got past Mendota 53-52 in the quarterfinals on Beyers’ short jumper with 11.9 seconds left and in the semifinals beat (Rock Island) Alleman 59-48 to avenge a quarterfinal loss the previous season.

Shelbyville won the Litchfield Tournament and beat nationally ranked Booker T. Washington of Tulsa, Oklahoma in the prestigious Coca-Cola/KMOX Shootout in St. Louis. The team was known for its exceptional balance as all five starters averaged in double figures.
