Biography: After scoring 1,673 points in a high school career, Joe Ramsey was named a small-school all-state player in 1961 and was the top scorer in the Centralia Sintinal’s circulation area with a 27.1 ppg average. He was a leader during one of Southern Illinois University’s finest three years of basketball. Ramsey was a consistent shooter and quickly earned a spot as a Saluki starter. He played in 28 of SIU’s 30 games as a sophomore and all 26 as a junior and senior. Ramsey averaged 7.4 ppg as a sophomore, 16.0 as a junior and 15.6 as a senior. The Salukis posted a 56-24 record during Ramsey’s three year stint at the Carbondale school. His 1,030 career points placed him sixth on the Saluki all-time scoring list when he graduated. During Ramsey’s junior season he scored a career high 39 against Kentucky Wesleyan and was named the Saluki squad’s most valuable player. Ramsey’s 199 rebounds led the team that season also. In both his junior and senior years, Ramsey was selected as team captain. Ramsey received All-American honorable mention as a junior and senior.
