Biography:

The Teutopolis girl’s basketball team won the IHSA Class A state championship and made history as the only school to win boys’ and girls’ titles in the same year. The Wooden Shoes finished with a 30-1 record and a No. 1 Associated Press final regular-season ranking as their only loss was in the season opener to Class AA Centralia High School. They were led by four seniors who refused to lose and were a team of role players led by Doris Carie (who became the first Illinois Ms. Basketball), Beth Niebrugge, Lisa Schumacher and Sandy Braun. The fifth starter was Gina Beckman and the rest of the team were freshmen and sophomores who would become state champions two years later. This group of seniors showed what role players can do if they accept their roles and play with determination. They just refused to lose!

Carie received first-team all-tournament honors as she averaged 24.3 points in the three IHSA Elite Eight games in Champaign. She had 29 in a quarterfinal win over Piper City/Ford Central Coop, 24 points and 6 rebounds in the semifinal win over Pittsfield High School and 20 points in a 59-44 win over (Metropolis) Massac County High School for the title. Niebrugge had 18 points and 10 rebounds and Braun had 12 points and 10 rebounds in the final.
