Biography: The 1988 Teutopolis girls basketball team became the first one in program history to finish undefeated at 32-0. The Wooden Shoes finished the regular season as the top-ranked team in the Class A Associated Press state poll. They were led by all-state player Laurie Holman, who later returned to become an assistant coach and highly successful head coach who was 382-101 with five Final Four trophies in 14 years through the 2019-20 season.
The 1988 squad was a team in every sense of the word as all five starters averaged between 10-12 points a game. They set a state tournament record for allowing the fewest points in the state series (88 in three Elite Eight games) and were the best defensive team that played for Teutopolis High School. The seniors set the tone, starting with Holman, Cindy Thoele, Kim Bloemer, Donna Niebrugge and Angie Ruholl. The tradition of team play, players accepting their roles and a strong desire to play defense set the tone for the next two seasons.
Holman averaged 18.7 points in the Elite Eight and made the all-tournament team with Connie Ruholl. Holman (16 points), Marsha Campbell (13) and Connie Ruholl (12) led the balanced attack in a 54-35 win over (Elgin) St. Edward High School in the title game.
