Biography:
The 1995 Teutopolis Lady Wooden Shoes won a school-record 33 games and lost only once as they finished the regular season ranked second in the Class A Associated Press state poll. They beat Carlyle High School 48-46 in the title game with 1.1 seconds left on the clock on a perfect read from all-stater Maria Niebrugge and a perfect pass from Gina Bloemer. Niebrugge hit the game-winner as the horn sounded.
The team had finished third in 1994 and lost in the quarterfinals in 1993 so the law of averages caught up with them. Niebrugge, Bloemer and Amy Niebrugge were all-state selections and with seniors Crystal Worman and Marsha Meyers and a strong supporting cast of juniors and a sophomore, this team played with a lot of character and the desire to win.
Bloemer (17.7 ppg) and Maria Niebrugge (16.3 ppg) were named all-tournament in the Elite Eight. The Woden Shoes rallied from a 4-point halftime deficit in the title game as Bloemer had 20 points and 5 assists and Niebrugge had 17 points and 12 rebounds.
